ENERGY HEALING IS PARAMOUNT TO PHYSICAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING!

Did you know that pain, illness and or dis-ease are physical indications of an energetic imbalance in the body?  When we experience prolonged exposure to stress or the adrenals become over exhausted and resistant to shutting down the body remains on high alert setting the body up for illnesses and disease.  In today’s overly STRESSED and toxic world this correlates to about 95% of today’s lack of optimal health and why disease is so prevalent and manifests into physical symptoms!

You can improve your overall well-being by removing the physical, mental and emotional effects of daily stress which permeates into our tissues, energy fields and creates symptoms of distress. untitled (9)

Any imbalance in the body is caused by experiences, thoughts and limiting beliefs which remain held within as negative charges.  To help keep the harmony within is to treat such imbalances by releasing this disruptive charge in the energy field allowing the body itself to clear naturally.  Physical symptoms can be eliminated as the natural flow of life force is restored and the stress response is reset.

Science and quantum physics now acknowledges the existence of the human energy field (HEF) which surrounds and permeates the human body.  Known energy centers called chakras, meridian pathways support the health of one’s endocrine and nervous system as well as internal organs, associated glands and tissues.  It is life’s daily stresses that easily offsets the balance of the HEF running through these centers causing pain, illness or dis-ease if this flow is not restored.

According to Asian medical teachings true health requires harmony within these subtle bodies of energy to keep the physical body performing optimally.  Being in alignment and balance allows the frequencies of energy to resonate at a higher cellular vibration to facilitate the body’s own unique ability to heal itself.

Holistic healthcare is supporting all levels of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of one’s life which is vital to our existence.raise-your-frequency-quotes-1

Vibration is at the heart of all creation.  Energy is vibration in motion as frequency is like an electrical current with each organ and tissue vibrating at different or corresponding frequencies.  Everything has an electrical frequency. Love is a very high vibration as is light, touch, as well as essential oils which have been proven to have the highest frequency of any natural known substance known to man.  It is believed that the chemistry and frequencies of essential oils has the ability to help man maintain an internal environment that make it difficult for disease, bacteria, viruses, fungus to live.

When the body receives special frequencies from human touch or tools such as low light laser waves and essential oils on special points or areas of blocked energy channels they assist in clearing and re-energizing the human energy systems. When the body is in a deeper relaxed state a relaxation response occurs and while utilizing the proper tools often people experience a shift in consciousness leading to a greater awareness of how they perceive their world.

The body also holds emotional patterns regardless of conscious awareness. These are stored as a cellular memory and reside in the organs or regions of the body that have these corresponding vibrational frequencies.  In order to change negative emotional patterns, there must be a willingness to change one’s thinking as it can be measured scientifically in megahertz (MHz).  Negative thoughts lower one’s frequencies by 12MHz and positive thoughts, prayers and meditations increase it up to 15MHz.f3d096e19aa6ff29b0163119e414eeb6

It’s the bodies limbic system that stores and releases emotional trauma in the body.  Our sense of smell is extremely relevant to our feelings as the olfactory system makes inhalation of certain oils very beneficial to our overall emotional well-being. Certain essential oils actually detoxify and help re-establish cellular balance in the body making them one of the greatest therapeutic tools  that I  highly recommend.

The low light laser therapy is technology at its best which works at a cellular level stimulating and speeding up the mitochondria in communication with the brain and nervous system for neurological stress reduction and faster healing.  By sending proper frequencies of healing information thru numerous pathways in the body allowing it to reset and reprogram itself for any  condition that produces an inflammation response or has been weakened by stresses of our daily lives.

I’ve been blessed to be able to share many modalities of healing and balancing as well as simultaneously using food as medicine. Minerals, enzymes, vitamins, essential fatty acids and other nutrients help regulate our cells functioning which then regulates the hormonal messengers to maintain balance within.

It’s emotions that adversely regulate our genetic expression and it is a mind/body(belief/biology) system that influences the healing potential making the mind more powerful than drugs to regain optimal health.  Our state of mind is very key to unlocking a very powerful response  within that profoundly effects our personal lives as well as the collective life of our species.911102278484c08f90f78cec76080d81

You can stop chasing symptoms of imbalance by treating the body as a whole functional unit that can heal at a cellular level by understanding we are not victims of our genes but instead have an unlimited capacity to live a life overflowing with peace, happiness and love.

As an added note: to delve deeper into this understanding, one of the forerunners of the future of science and the power of consciousness Bruce Harold Lipton, who’s an American developmental biologist best known for promoting the idea that genes and DNA can be manipulated by a person’s beliefs.  He clearly expresses the missing link between life and consciousness in his latest book Biology of Belief…a good summer read, maybe not a novel, but I couldn’t put it down.

Blessings and better balance my friends,   ~ Lisa D’Alessandro

What Our Cells Need to Thrive?

For many we are born into this world without a glitch, but for the most, this new life is toxic and tainted.  We enter this universe ready to thrive, with of course, the helpful boost from our mother’s nurturing bosom to have abundant health. To co-exist in harmony and experience happiness that is our birthright.

In any life, there are the elements to contend with and the adaptation begins for survival.  Our bodies are uniquely formed from a chain of DNA which remarkably designs our genetics, characteristics, structure and constitution.  The human framework is derived from bacterial cells, proteins and water. meditating cellular figure      These biological cells that we are born with are capable of thriving and armed with defenses to survive, interact and maintain their existence that of which we know of as our Immune System.

The immune system is an exceedingly complex network of cells that activate and secrete and array of chemicals.  Its mission is to protect the body against invading pathogens and other foreign substances.

We operate and function due to the amazing hardwired dynamics of our brain that allows us to optimally move, process thoughts, emotions, danger, equate, associate, find solutions, focus, remember tasks, take control and hopefully retain memory .  The mind is our brilliant computer quickly calculating all… it assesses our physiological state while determining our thoughts, feelings, and sensory input.

This beautiful, safe and solemn world has been compromised by our own intelligence influencing many environmental insults that affect our true health and well-being.  True health is the absence of disease.  Does that exist anymore in this toxic world in which the insults are many?

In today’s world of sugar ridden foods, additives, preservatives, pesticides, plastics,  inhaled & ingested chemicals, medications, hormones and antibiotic usage that are also passed on through consumption of meats, dairy and eggs products and many more which overwhelm the immune system’s natural detoxing pathways causing chronic health problems.   These factors which can be recognized in the mother’s umbilical cord which either  lack antibodies and depleted good flora as they get  passed along in utero or NOT contribute to a weaker immunity.   It’s a fact that when the natural birthing process is complicated and the child doesn’t receive more of the needed exposure to bacteria and pathogens provided in transit, resistance against illness weakens their immature immunity further.  This “passive immunity” stage can also be more vulnerable when vital colostrum and lactoferrin an infant requires through breast feeding isn’t provided to build up a stronger resistance against disease. the breastfed baby Studies suggest that breast-fed babies have a higher initial count of bifidobacteria colonization than formula fed babies and we know how beneficial this balance of good versus bad is to the optimal functioning of the digestive system.

Our digestive system is the hub of our health as Hippocrates proclaimed long ago “all disease begins in the gut”.  This is where most of our immune system is comprised and the components to keep the balance or homeostasis struggles.   Dr. Greg Wilson has claimed “Our health is directly influenced by our Immune system” and a healthy digestive tract is the body’s first line of defense against pathogenic invaders.   There’s only one disease and it’s the malfunctioning of cells due to exposure of toxins and a lack of nutrients that are needed to support a strong healthy immune system.

Good nutrition is absolutely critical for a healthy immune response, but beneficial microflora trumps all. As research has proven these trillions of organisms that live in the digestive tract alone which collectively are known as the “microbiome” influence our health!   By increasing the production of compounds that inhibit or destroy pathogenic bacteria as well as by increasing the surface area for more optimal nutrient absorption our bodies can thrive better!good_bad_bacteria

Understanding your microbiome is vitally important for people suffering from chronic diseases of the heart, digestive system, diabetes, thyroid disorders and all auto immune diseases.

What do we need to understand?  We all have predisposing factors in our DNA, but if we remove the environmental triggers we can change our genetic expression for disease.  Remarkably recent research has scientifically identified that 90% of all cells and all genetic material in the human body is our gut flora.

Our bodies are just like a tent, a habitat for this mass amount of microbes which actually run the show in every aspect of our health.  Four factors that lead the body into a disease state are; first any trauma or stress that sets off our genetic vulnerability, environmental triggers which cause inflammation, gut permeability and emotions or beliefs that can manifest and psychologically inhibit our cellular functioning.

Life experiences can either stimulate or suppress the onset of disease and mess with our life span.  Trauma or some stressful situations sometimes cannot be avoided but we do have lifestyle choices to help with stress management, good nutrition, exercise, a positive outlook on life, living in happiness and gratitude as well as being in service and spiritually aligned.  The one of two, which is most concerning is environmental triggers.  This is where we do have the ability to avoid or be more consciously selective over what we inhale, ingest and put on our bodies that are toxic.  By living more in harmony with what nature has provided there’s less of a burden in which to naturally detoxify.   The body takes in all of these chemicals, pesticides, additives, genetically modified foods and other various influences, but it can’t metabolize all of these bombarding compounds so they get stored in our fatty tissue or dumped in a weakened organ.

Gut permeability or a Leaky gut is due to an imbalance of beneficial microflora largely due to generations of an overabundant use of antibiotics that have been overly administered in the beef, chicken, dairy industry and by our medical professionals as the ‘cure all’.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a strong warning to stop the over using of antibiotics as it has been clearly defined to destroy the inner ecosystem of our digestive system inadvertently depleting our immune systems capabilities.  As a result, the gut gets taken over by pathogens, by pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa’s, yeast and yes yuck, worms, which over time cause disease and namely auto-immune and neurological  disorders.  It is known that these pathogens produce their own poisonous toxic substances as they continue to digest the food that comes along and these toxic macromolecules pass through the gut lining and get distributed around the body and brain.  The brain is very susceptible because it’s a fatty tissue organ. outoforderbrainWhen the toxicity builds up so does the range of mental disorders from slight brain fog, learning disabilities, depression, ADHD, addictive behaviors to autism, seizures, Alzheimers and more.   It depends on where the weak link is in the body, for some it might be the joints and that person will develop arthritis.  Most recognize digestive issue imbalances as gas, bloating, belching, burping, diarrhea, heartburn or gerd but the more serious are colitis, IBS, Crohns and Celiac disease that are becoming more prevalent.

Probiotic supplementation has been researched to reduce markers of intestinal inflammation, decrease intestinal permeability and highly beneficial role in reducing food related allergies.  This is critical for nutrient absorption as we are walking around more of a malnourished nation because the integrity of the gut wall has been poked.  It is like a window screen with holes allowing all the flies and mosquitos to get in.  As a result, food doesn’t get a chance to be digested properly before being absorbed.  These larger improperly digested proteins enter the bloodstream and when it doesn’t get recognized as food, but a foreign substance, it results in a developed allergy or food intolerance.

The trouble with this kind of allergy, an immune response is triggered manifesting into other symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes, a skin rash, dermatitis, headache to a drop in energy or blood sugar, and/or the more severe asthma, chronic cystitis, arthritis, tinnitus inflammatory conditions.   These reactions can happen immediately or it can be delayed by hours, days or a week making it more difficult to recognize the specific food source that the immune system now begins to constantly respond in a defensive way.  Depending on the degree of damage to the gut wall whether it has been mildly porous or a river of toxicity that has permeated and distributed around the body or across the blood brain barrier can be recognized by physical and psychological symptoms.  When any symptom is revealed, this is the way the body tells us it’s out of balance!never take a pill

How do you listen and respond?  Mainstream medicine gives those that choose a quick fix pill that suppresses one’s suffering, yet hasn’t addressed the underlying root cause so the systemic out of control inflammatory fire continues to burn and auto conditions continue to rage.

The paradigm shift of what functional doctors are recognizing now is due to the new research and data on the microbiome and “enteric neuroscience” of how our intestines affects our nerves which pathway  leads straight to the brain.  The scientific data that’s been buried in regards to autoimmunity, specifically to wheat and gluten which are the first grains of proteins to be hybridized or modified and now recognized as the source for major concern because over 200 autoimmune conditions to which the dots can now be connected as  a major cause of why our guts leak.

Food intolerances, allergies and auto immune disorders can be resolved if the root causes are addressed.  The first focus is to heal and seal the gut lining.  By removing the culprits, replacing needed nutrients and nutraceuticals to re-establish the inner ecosystems imbalance, replenishing the diet with a proper nutritional protocol that will enhance each person’s bio-individual health allowing the revitalization process to begin.  There is no quick fix for our health but a conscious choice to make lifestyle changes that are conducive to nourishing your cells and gut with primary and secondary foods that will promote a change of well-being.

My conclusion could end with those pearls of advice that if your health matters than let food, purified water, the proper healing nutraceuticals and lifestyle choices take precedence.   Let me tell you once you’ve achieved inner healing and inner balance like myself, who’s been there and done that, I certainly do not deprive myself of eating well and good while even enjoying a glass of wine with my meals now and then.  We all have personal choices to make and it comes down to the quality of life you want to live?  For me and those who find their way to my practice it about aging gracefully, self- love and truly wanting to feel good, vibrant, clearer more focused and happier in their bodies again.every time you eat or drink

According to recent 10 year studies, the top two leading causes of death in the United States is one being Auto-Immune Disorders and the other is Iatrogenic illness which is death resulting from medical treatments or adverse drug effects.  A 2003 government 10-year study published data that iatrogenic illness is actually responsible for more than 300,000 deaths a year.  Today these maladies of statistics taken from Dr. Gary Null and other medical colleagues published in Death by Medicine clearly defines and specifically states findings in regards, but the end result concludes …“Our estimated 10-year total of 7.8 million iatrogenic deaths is more than all the casualties from all the wars fought by the US throughout its entire history.”  Modern medicine does save lives, but those staggering statistics should be getting better not worse.

These are dismaying statistics, especially for a healing professional like myself who is geared to rebuild digestion, increase one’s energy, boost brain power and bring the body back to better balance as a Certified American Drugless Practitioner, a Certified Gluten Practitioner and Nutritionist that has successfully helped others come off their medications and nurture a more harmonious lifestyle. All by using foods, nutraceuticals and natural balancing tools.

As a Holistic Practitioner this message is  important so that you may also be aware that the leading Leaky Gut triggersdo you have a leaky gut are from Chronic Antibiotic or NSAID use, Mercury fillings, Heavy Metal Exposures or Environmental Toxins that we are exposed to from the air we breathe to the water and foods we may drink.  Traumatic Brain Injury, Chemo or Radiation Treatments, Cesarean Birth, Chronic Inflammation and Stress again due to unrecognizable food sensitivities and eating out of a box or fast food lane.   Liver toxicity from alcohol use or just consuming non-essential Carbs and Sugar that lead to Diabetes or Non-Alcoholic Liver Disease.  Other culprits are Industrial Seed Oils or an Inflammatory Omega 6/Omega 3 ratio which is due primarily to eating meat that is NOT grass fed or organic.  Hormonal Imbalance can result for many reasons but think about all the personal care products you put your body that act as hormone disruptors causing an Xenoestrogen effect.   So ask yourself why would companies like Johnson and Johnson have two lines of products, one for the US and ship the non-toxic one’s over to Europe?   Yes, because they recognize the chemicals harmful effects and have banned their use just as they have with Genetically Modified foods.   Lastly, we are a malnourished nation from Vitamin and Nutrient Deficiencies because of the Standard American Diet and from the unhealthy imbalance of the human microbiome that gets worse with each generation.the doctor of the future

If there’s three things to take away from this article, improve your gut flora while filling yourself up with whole foods in the form of organic vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, wild caught fish or farm raised beef, poultry and eggs instead of processed and refined products.  Thirdly, I hope you embrace the concept of lifestyle balance and a holistic approach to wellness as the most effective solution to your overall health and well-being.  The evolution of Medicine is shifting and it’s vital for the survival of the generations we are bringing into this world to be able to THRIVE in a world that has somewhat fallen victim to greed and disease.

IS IT BRAIN FOG OR SOMETHING MORE?

We’ve all had moments where we have a little lapse in mental memory as we forgot what we were going to say, misplaced our keys, forgot a name or just seemed to feel a bit hazy.  It does happen to the best of us as we blame it on a “senior moment”.

However, it’s no joking matter if you are having frequent bouts of memory loss, having trouble focusing and concentrating, feelings of forgetfulness or even constantly confused or spacey.

shultz's image brain gone homeThe brain is always “on” as there isn’t an on/off switch as it is constantly processing, sending, sorting and receiving information.  Even while we sleep the brain is busy keeping the blood pumping and circulating lungs breathing, hormones releasing and body in the best of balance.  While we are awake, it’s our very own computer hard drive working diligently to keep muscles moving, processing emotional stimuli,  interpreting our five senses operating as optimally as possible getting the job done….all this requires a significant amount of energy, oxygen and optimal nutrition.

If the body becomes too acidic with an abundant amount of inflammation from the chemicals we breathe in everyday, the processed, packaged, those with preservatives, additives, pesticide ridden and genetically modified foods.  Yes the brain will not function optimally if there’s a lack of efficient nutrients to fuel the body or water to help supply proper mineral balance as well as if food allergies, sensitivities or too much stress keep calm and eat healthyhinders the synapses.

There are many factors that can bring about symptoms of brain fog from the Standard American Diet that eats more out of the box, in the fast food lanes and consuming many food sources which are ridden with antibiotics and hormones.  While we are not a culture that regularly enjoys fermented and omega rich foods to nourish the gut which ultimately enhances our brains optimal potential too.

When the inner ecosystem of our digestive system is depleted of necessary good bacteria or optimal gut flora which enhances nutrient absorption, acts as the first line of defense against pathogens, and help seal it off from inflammation passing into the bloodstream that also crosses over the blood brain barrier causing degeneration.

Stress from all of these imbalances lead to further symptoms occurring in the body as a whole causing it to age more rapidly.  These symptoms show up as hormonal issues, immune imbalances, digestive disturbances, detoxing dilemna’s, environmental  suppression leading to allergies, chemical sensitivities and neurotransmitter inadequacies.

You might have heard the saying “the food you eat can either be the safest most powerful form of medicine or the worst form of poison.”  Our digestive system is the hub of our health and it has been so compromised in this fast paced toxic world that is stressed on so many different levels.

The causes of brain fog or that “out of order” feeling: danger brain fog

  • Physical, mental and emotional stress
  • Food intolerances and sensitivities
  • Nutrient deficiencies and mineral imbalances
  • Hypoglycemia or blood sugar
  • Metal toxicity
  • Liver, kidney, lymphatic dysfunction
  • Dehydration or insufficient oxygen
  • Hormonal imbalances(including menopause, pms and even pregnancy)
  • Endocrine or Metabolic Mayheim
  • Candida Overgrowth and parasite infections
  • Medications
  • Serious medical conditions such as Lyme infections, brain tumor, meningitis, epilepsy, Parkinsons, autoimmune diseases, and physical head trauma.
  • Leaky gut and digestive disturbances
  • Thyroid disease
  • Structural misalignment

What if you are already experiencing these symptoms of degeneration?  By taking action today you can actually support and enhance those mental muscles so the future will be clear and more concise!

Some Simple Steps For Optimal Brain Potential

Your body and brain has the ability to heal and be well.   Yes, these mental mindless moments are common, yet it isn’t “normal” and shouldn’t be ignored as just a consequence of growing older.  It’s when we use excuses to neglect prioritizing the little signs before they erupt into larger symptoms of disease and aging less gracefully.

The most crucial part is understanding and identifying with what sources of stress oh i'm stressedare causing havoc to your body as a whole, hindering your brain then all you need to do is nurture yourself properly, fuel and care for it as if it is the greatest gift you’ve been given.

Stress causes or exacerbates 80-85% of all human illness according to the American Medical Assoication.

This is the key to overcoming and restoring most health issues when knowing that the body’s biochemistry is as intricate as a spider’s web woven from the central digestive system while being connected from the brain to the toes.

There exists scientific evidence that there’s a gut brain axis present which correlates to a direct link between these two crucial systems and how they function optimally or not, when there’s imbalance and too many toxins causing inflammation.  This very real connection between the gut and brain is due to an increased intestinal permeability known as Leaky Gut Syndrome in which waste, bacteria, proteins and fats and other harmful undigested foods cross through the inflamed gut lining and into the bloodstream.  Once these toxic substances hit the bloodstream they can travel anywhere in the body, including joints, organs and very commonly cross the blood brain barrier causing destruction and disruption to the neuron pathways.

 caution heavy fog

This toxic leakage also challenges our immune system and other types of white blood cells to increase the production of inflammation related chemicals.  Inflammation blocks the metabolic pathways needed for Seretonin which is responsible for mood, behavior and sugar so left untreated it results in added stress, depression, obesity and addictive behaviors such as smoking and drug use.

This inflammatory response is directly responsible for over 120 million plus diagnosed with depression from the combination of a lack of vital nutrients not present in the Standard American Diet or the improper absorption of enough B vitamins and/or healthy fats.  Here’s another relative news flash, 68 million children are diagnosed on the Autistic spectrum with 1 in 18 children having food allergies and 1 in 8 presenting with contact allergies.

A toxic colon will lead to flooding your brain with the same, as many people who experience a “scatteredbrain” feeling , brain fog, anxiety, mood disorders are also prone to constipation, bloating, gas or diarrhea or digestive disturbances.  This more than likely means there’s an imbalance to the inner microbiome of friendly versus the “bad” bacteria that makes up the core constitution of the digestive tract.  Bad bacteria also secrete toxins that enter into the bloodstream that contributes to wreaking havoc in our headsneurotoxicity woman…muddling your thoughts, raising the risk of depression, dementia, Alzheimer’s, Autism, ADHD and anxieties.

Knowing Hippocrates had it right with “disease begins in the gut” there’s a number of things including hormonal imbalances, depleted good gut flora, bacterial or yeast overgrowth, food intolerances, toxins, GMO’s and parasite infestations that need to be considered.  Having a functional diagnostic holistic practitioner see a certified nutritionistto help identify what’s going on and how to address it naturally, instead of just chasing symptoms or suppressing them further with more medications is the way to go if your head is already spinning with all this mind blowing information. A little pun intended.

It’s been quoted that modern wheat is responsible for destroying more brains in this country than all the strokes, car accidents and head trauma’s combined.  If you want to boost your brain power, keep your memory, lift your mood and energy as well as heal from a host of common complaints that even your doctors can not sometimes diagnosis you must look to the root causes.caution wheat

Have you ever heard of Dr. David Perlmutter, who talks about the surprising truth about wheat, carbs and sugar- your brains silent killers in his book Grain Brain.  He states that Zonullin is the cornerstone of diseases characterized by inflammation in the gut.  Gluten in wheat leads to the production of zonullin which is now present in 100 percent of humans. This is a major cause to the gaps in the intestines that opens the tight junctions of the blood brain barrier allowing an excessive amount of neurodegenerative dysfunction.

Most brain impairment is caused by a consumption of gluten, wheat and sugar molecules known as carbohydrates.  A diet high in carbs is related to atrophy not only in the small intestine but deterioration of the brain.  Like in Pooh’s world, your brain isn’t full of fluff, it’s a fatty tissue where toxins can take up a lot of space.  sugarSugar is one of the worst toxins that triggers addictive tendencies to take over due to the fact it creates an opiate affect releasing the “feel good chemical” dopamine into our bloodstream.

If that’s not all, I have more true BS to sort through so you have a steady and strong head on your shoulders.  The brain certainly likes its balanced supply of its favorite fuel, blood sugar.  It’s similar to the story, Goldie Locks and the Three Bears in which the body doesn’t need too much or too little at any time, but there’s a “just  right” to make the brain content.  When the blood sugar is high it not only can lead to diabesity, damage the brain, but could lead to the development of dementia later in life.  Vice versa when blood sugar levels are too low individuals deal with hypoglycemic effects like brain fog, headaches, nausea, irritability, constant hunger pangs and fatigue are a few symptoms.

Let thy food and water by thy medicine as real whole foods nourish our cells sending vital information to the brain for optimal  cellular health.let thy food be thy medicine

It’s the malfunctioning of cells from the exposure of toxins to the lack of nutrients together that weaken the Immune System.  Dr. Greg Wilson, PhD said it best…”our health is directly influenced by our Immune System.”  The medical experts from The Journal of the American Medical Association have summed it up wellness as “in the coming decades, the most important determinant of health and longevity will be the personal choices made by each individual.”

However, many people have allergies, sensitivities, and intolerances to certain otherwise healthy foods which because of a crippled immune system the body perceives these food substances as a threat and the body goes on the attack.  This results in an increase in antibodies and inflammation which leads to a variety of symptoms including digestive distress, hormonal issues, fatigue, skin problems and yes an “out of order brain”.

Leaky Gut Syndrome and Whats Grain Got to do with it??

As you know the ‘natural foodie’ in me follows that belief of Hippocrates… “let thy food be thy medicine”. Nutrition is the best medicine and today’s doctors still treat disease versus the plan of healing the root cause, INFLAMMATON.
It’s silent inflammation that is brought on by today’s wheat, gluten, carbs and sugars that is of epidemic proportions causing chronic disease. Our nation is getting weaker, fatter and sicker with the numbers rising rapidly with heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, auto-immune disorders, Alzheimers, autism, ADHD, allergies, depression and so on. In the last hundred years the increase in complex sugars, refined flours and chemical additives in the diet has led to a huge increase in health problems ranging from severe bowel disorders to obesity, to the dis-ease your doctor can’t diagnose to one of the most significant, brain function disorders.
We live in a very toxic, highly processed and fast paced stressed society and because of that the most recognized protocol is still the quick fix, pop a pill as the cure to one thing yet weakens another. Modern medicine hasn’t connected the dots, but research has as 11,000 countless documents since 1980’s proving the Leaky Gut Syndrome.
Hippocrates was also right in his theory that all disease begins in the gut since 80% of our immune system stems from imbalance of our gut flora. When the balance becomes disturbed by an overgrowth of intestinal microbes competing for the incoming nutrients which inhibit digestion in the stomach and small intestine. As this happens good vitamins and minerals get depleted with more toxins being given off from their by-products. This may literally be hard to digest that the foods we’ve been brought up on, those comforting foods that consist of carbs and sugars are damaging the mucosal layer that is responsible for absorption. These absorptive cells are called microvilli which is the barrier between the nutrition we take in and our bloodstream. Significantly in most cases causing vitamin B, folic acid deficiencies and thus amino acids are critically depleted. This is significant to our neurotransmitters that unleash our brain’s optimal potential and answers also to the mental health question that plagues our nation.
Two things occur in response, the small intestine produces more mucus making cells creating a bio-film which inhibits enzyme absorption to the proteins, carbohydrates and fats we ingest.
Though it sounds like a double whammy, it is because the inflammatory response also creates minute holes into this delicate lining that leaks proteins, toxins into our bloodstream causing havoc on our well-beings and slowly destroys our health. These proteins then challenge parts of the immune system and other types of white blood cells that increases production of inflammation related chemicals.
Most auto immune diseases, including Alzheimer’s, ADHD and Parkinsons can be regulated by healing the permeable gut lining that occurs because of the overuse of antacids, toxic and processed foods, antibiotic usage and especially by the grains that have changed over the centuries.
Humans are not genetically designed to process wheat or gluten of today’s modernized and hybridized wheat crops. There’s been major chromosomal changes, structural as well as chemical properties to the grain we eat as opposed to the grain that our ancestors consumed. Dr. Perlmutter, MD and author of “grain Brain” states…“We should eat a diet similar to what our ancestors survived on for 2.6 million years and reprogram support of our genetic destiny for the better”. Gluten in wheat leads to the production of Zonullin in the gut that increases the permeability of the intestinal walls. Zonullin is present in 100% of humans and is the cornerstone of diseases characterized by this silent inflammation.
Brain dysfunction, impairment, mental disorders, depression and that brain fog is largely due to inflammation from consumption of gluten and sugar molecules known as carbs(including fruit). A diet high in carbs is related to atrophy or deterioration of the brain and that is why so many individuals have chosen a ‘feel good’ Paleo diet.
Grains are not only nutritionally unnecessary, but downright harmful, packed with toxic anti-nutrients and inflammatory proteins which a well -known cardiologist, Dr. William Davis calls wheat “the perfect chronic poison.”
The average American consumes 55 pounds of wheat flour every year making refined flour the #1 source of calories in the American diet and sugar as the second source of malnutrition with 140 pounds of sugar yearly, both causing a catastrophic public health crisis!
Aging gracefully and attaining optimal brain and body potential is a matter of nourishing harmony within using intelligent nutrition as the best medicine. It is now understood that beyond calories, fat, protein, carbs and micronutrients these all powerfully regulate the expression of our genes and shifts the DNA for better or worse.
Little whole grain lies have been invented to sell cheap agricultural products at huge markups, costing us distress and disease all of which might be one of the biggest health misconceptions that has been perpetrated on the public. As you probably already understand that high glycemic foods cause a rapid rise in blood sugar and insulin which results in a cascade of systemic inflammation increasing your risk for the big ‘C’, Alzheimers, heart disease, fatty liver and diabetes.
High insulin levels promote the storage of ‘visceral’ belly fat, which surrounds your organs and sends metabolic messages throughout the body promoting disease.
Do you know that high blood sugar also causes the formation of advanced glycation end-products(AGEs)? These nasty and harmful little compounds speed up the aging process and damage tissues which are recognizable on the skin in the form of wrinkles and loss of elasticity.
Despite its “HEALTHY HALO”, the glycemic index of whole wheat is among the highest of all foods! According to research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, “eating two slices of whole wheat bread spikes your blood sugar more than drinking a can of soda…eating a candy bar or just helping yourself to six teaspoons of table sugar!”
What is to blame? It’s a type of carbohydrate in 75% of wheat that forms amylopectin A…a compound that uniquely and rapidly is transformed into glucose. This compound is also responsible for triggering an oxidation of cholesterol in the blood that causes heart disease. Many doctors are in agreement that they believe the number one risk factor for heart disease in the U.S. is due to high count of LDL cholesterol particles. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that people with high levels of small dense LDL have a 300% greater risk of having a heart attack!
Some shocking news and easily overlooked even to me as a true real life living and knowing believer in the significance of going Gluten-free in regards to improving one’s health and well-being was how some ingredients send blood sugar soaring. It’s all about getting out of any box and away from the processed foods that contain flours that can send the glycemic levels off the chart. Most gluten free breads, cereals, pastas, crackers and cookies use ingredients that are in some cases are worse than that of wheat! Beware of Corn Starch, Tapioca Starch, Rice Flour, Potato Starch, Sorghum flour and millet as Dr. William Davis, author of the Wheat Belly has to say about these devastating alternatives…”these powdered starches are among the few foods that increase blood sugar higher than even whole wheat. It means these foods trigger weight gain in the abdomen, increase blood sugars, insulin resistance, diabetes, cataracts and arthritis. They are NOT healthy replacements for wheat.”
Our brains are also very vulnerable to the overload of heavy metals that are presenting themselves in the air, food and water that we are exposed to daily. Arsenic is a deadly poison and some Gluten-free products contain 90 times more arsenic then that of which the EPA allows for in drinking water! Brown rice, flours and syrups have been on the Consumer labs analysis reports as a serious risk factor that even at low levels can lead to headaches, fatigue, brain fog and digestive issues…not to mention heart disease, cancer, respiratory illness and diabetes.
There are at least 300 health-related issues that have been linked to gluten causing systemic inflammation, BUT it’s not the only problem. Plants have an intelligence mechanism to evoke survival and according to a study published in Plant Physiology, modern wheat is capable of producing at least 23,788 unique proteins! This explains why some people have shown severe reactions to wheat and no reaction at all to gluten itself. Most conventional lab testing looks for just two antibodies related to gluten and if you test negative for these two your doctor will give you a clean bill of health and the dis-ease you are feeling goes undiagnosed.
Plants are under just as much evolutionary pressure for survival and have built in defenses to discourage animals from predation. There are three compounds in grains and psudograins… lectins, saponins, and protease inhibitors that are designed to disrupt the digestive process. Lectins deprive you of vital nutrients and contribute to leaky gut syndrome. Saponins damage the enterocytes, the cells that line the gut and controls what passes in and out to a too high of degree for the mucosal lining to handle. A seed’s last line of defense is destroying the digestive enzymes necessary for breaking down any and all of the proteins ingested. These protease inhibitors directly damage the pancreas which is where the digestive enzymes are produced causing cancer to develop eventually. In wheat, a very toxic effect spirals throughout the body’s tissues, including the heart and brain crossing the blood brain barrier. This wheat germ agglutinin(WGA) disrupts the hormonal system, weakens immunity, causes digestive distress and promotes systemic inflammation which is recognized as degenerative disease.
Even if wheat doesn’t cause you digestive distress…it doesn’t mean that it’s not damaging your body as inflammation is a silent killer that is the root cause and connected to all disease in the body. The discomfort doesn’t always begin as a digestive problem as almost 50% of newly diagnosed Celiac patients have no noticeable abdominal distress, but an array of other symptoms. A long list of skin conditions, nutrient deficiencies, arthritis, bone and joint pain, chronic sinus issues, lowered immunity, headaches, fatigue and many degrees of brain symptoms. Bread can cause madness and literally grain can destroy your brain. Doctors at Duke University reported a remarkable correlation when a woman with a 50 year history of delusions, hallucinations and suicide attempts stopped the wheat and her symptoms just disappeared.
Studies have proven even if you are NOT gluten intolerant grains and certain carbs cause inflammation and perforations in the gut…allowing unwanted substances to leak into your bloodstream causing damage to nearly every tissue, system and organ in your body. This sets the stage for chronic diseases triggering 55 proven causes of auto-immune conditions in which the body attacks itself. Type 1 Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, MS, Thyroid Disease, Fibromyalgia, CFS, Heart Disease, Cancer, Osteoporosis, IBS, Anemia, Epilepsy, Canker Sores, Lupus, Alzheimers and Allergies and the list goes on…sound like anyone or everyone you know?
It was published in the JAMA that gluten sensitive people who still consume grains increase their risk of death up to 75%!!! Sadly that accounts for so many mislead Americans who are challenged with a condition that has been medicated to suppress the symptoms or whose conditions can’t be given a firm diagnosis by the doctor. That was a familiar tune I heard for many years with unanswered tests and it wasn’t until my fourth child was born that his health was compromised with an array of allergies that I became more of a healthy holistic warrior. Knowing that the gut connects with the skin, metabolism, hormones, immune system, brain(SIBO), chronic infections, reflux, depression, anxiety, fatigue and lack of sleep eventually causing collateral damage to other healthy tissues and cells. Steps need to be taken to solving the problem with the number one being remove the trigger by stop taking in the culprits.
Most are left thinking if I can’t enjoy bagels, breads, buns and biscuits what am I to eat if even gluten-free breads are bad for you?? I understand totally as my whole family is not off all these gluten free products and totally ‘grain free’ as it takes time to create healthier habits. I believe the saying goes “Rome wasn’t built in a day” and the body isn’t destroyed or damaged automatically.
Trust me as there are healthy loaves of bread so you can get your intake of ‘daily bread’ and be healthy too! It’s learning how to go against the grain and introduce nutrient dense foods to create optimal well-being and brain biochemistry. These REAL breads are filling, delicious and there’s nothing imitation to them that you will love being a part of a growing number of grain free advocates. This is a lot to literally digest as rebuilding you guts digestive health requires necessary actions needed for everyone’s own bio-individual focuses and goals.

‘So what’s grain got to do with it’…I hope that you will now look and think differently with each bite you take or don’t.  If you struggle with an ailment, a specific debilitating condition, are on an overload of prescriptions or just want to feel and function better in your body… know that your mind will follow along too one healthy bite at a time by the intelligent food choices you decide.
It is my true passion is helping others attain balance, understanding nutrition, offer modalities that release the stress and reprogram the bodies central nervous system as well as a passion for teaching you tools for creating optimal vitality, more mindfulness and aging gracefully!

Ready set…Reset

Rev your engines its time to revitalize you bodies, recharge your brains, renew the cells, reawaken the spirit and rebalance the whole body!  Now is always the perfect time to manage your own healthcare reform and get out of the disease management mode.

Really…what am I referring to?  I started writing with a play on words, but I will refrain from getting carried away in regards to it becoming re-diculous…lol.   Seriously, the mindset is shifting as society in general is becoming more aware of how toxic our nation is, the importance of stress reduction and the understanding for the need of natural solutions is increasing, but we are still creatures of habit.  There’s reluctance and resistance…that total refusal to accept something new or different or just an unwillingness because its too much work.

Who’s ready for a challenge?

You’re given one life, one of the most vital components of life…is to love yourself and you will find love biting you back.  By honoring and taking care of the one body we’ve been gifted by doing all that’s necessary and knowing to keep our amazing machine running optimally. So many take better care of their cars, their beloved pets and family members.

In recognition of a time of year for revisiting new routines, readjusting our school, sports and events schedules and most profoundly reaping the rewards of a harvest season coming to a close.   This is the perfect time to cleanse our bodies with real nourishing wholesome foods.  I’ve been known to say this before…it takes a ‘bite’ more than ‘we are what we eat’ to holistically heal and create better balance.  It’s important also to reflect on all that we are grateful for and create a mindfulness in how we are handling the stress by checking in with and taking care of the self.  Adequate movement daily with some type of fitness regimen is also key as staying hydrated with adequate filtered water.

As my bi-annual cleanse come’s nearer I hear my own inner voice questioning taking on the mindset of creating a more harmonious inner ecosystem by eliminating the toxic buildup.  For me it’s my enjoyment of a glass of red wine with my meal at the end of the day and the cup of coffee that I really don’t need to get me going in the morning…it’s purely more tasteful than water can be all day long.

There’s never a perfect time to prioritize slowing down, purging from the processed world, but it makes a significance difference.  I hear it all the time in my coaching practice.  It’s natural to always hear some inner conflict, self sabotaging resistance that we conveniently come to some type of justification for putting off because of being reluctant to change.

I refer to it as doing the “Hokey Pokey” …we’ll put the right foot in or the left arm in but resist from putting our whole body in to ‘turn it all around’.

For moms, caregivers and professionals we have commitments, more challenges balancing all and everyone’s schedules and events. The excuses can be ongoing and never ending!  As a woman who is all of the above, let me tell you there’s never a convenient time, the daily things we juggle doesn’t lessen so maybe it’s best not too wait until the kids are off to college or a diagnosis vibrates in our ear.   Time seems to move faster and faster and it might be easier now to grab a quick fix than taking on preparing everyday meals or a meditative moment to unwind and feel our breath fill up our lungs and then calmly be recycled.

What about aging gracefully and living a quality life that doesn’t include a future of running from one doctors appointment to the next.  The Standard American Diet is literally SAD and the statistics that the average American by the age of 68 will be on almost 20 different meds is not a joke.  How many people do you know who are on anti-depressants or take a pill to fall asleep?

Taking responsibility for your health care will allow you to naturally respond to situations better, perform tasks with revitalized energy, enjoy life more since happiness is healthiness you will thrive and love life more!  Unleashing your brain and bodies optimal potential begins with Nourishing Harmony within.

Contemplation is understandable, the toxic nation and environment we live is undeniable, balancing our lifestyle is a challenge.  Doing a natural whole foods cleanse is like jumping in the leaves and consciously being in the moment of taking the time to have fun while doing a necessary annual chore.  The similarities; there’s work to do gathering the necessary to pull it off, we go for it with running speed as we go in for the plunge of a deliciously prepared meal with the enjoyment of a smile comes to our face and the thought of doing it again would fun to breakup the monotonous task.  Even though we need clean ourselves off a little…there’s always physical pieces that initially cling and the emotional part that contemplates… let’s do it again.

It’s an opportunity to break away from foods and vices that don’t support our well-beings, but only induce a stress response trigger.  This is not a diet or a starvation juice cleanse, but a time to give our liver, kidney’s and other endocrine glands a break from the toxic overload.  This autumn cleanse resonates with nourishing our souls with real fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and other organic protein sources and avoiding caffeine, alcohol, sugar, white flours, gluten, dairy, soy and processed foods.  Its a time to get out of the fast food lane and become aware of how our body is capable of maintaining balance when given wholesome foods.  By allowing it to function optimally like a car with a new oil change you will ultimately feel better, less achy, more vitalized.

Are you ready to reset your body, mind and spirit?  Do you realize how prevention is maintenance that includes the right kind of nutrients, daily exercise, proper hydration, implementing stress reduction and mindfulness?

What if this kind of cleanse actually shifts you to create some healthier habits or realize a certain type of food is creating that sinus symptom or digestive disturbance?  Yay for you, because you made the right choice and took a step into a whole new matrix and you can now do the dance and ‘turn yourself all about!’

I would love to assist you in an attempt to cleanse and reset your well-being as the more we know the better we do!

If you’re still reluctant I wanted to include a past blog that was written by the founder of a Health Coach Group I belong.  This was written by Cathy Sykora called Health Reform-For Real.

I am taking another little break in my series on organization to talk about something that is on everyone’s tongue right now and that is health care reform. The health care plan has found everyone with an opinion and they are strong opinions. It is a subject that has religion, money and politics all involved not to mention our basic quality of life.

If you ask a group of people the question, “Who understands the new health care program?” not too many fully understand it. There is no question that there is a crisis in our country. We are a nation with a BUNCH of sick people and some of them with no way to pay to get better. In addition to that, tons of money is being spent on treatments that could be prevented.
We have a cockeyed lifestyle.
Here it is: the truth is that most of us are born healthy. We live our life then all of a sudden we notice we can’t do the things we used to do. We can’t move as well and our stomachs are all swollen up. We are having digestive problems and migraines and we are doing all we can to get through the day, fall asleep (if we can sleep) and then get up and start all over again.
We keep getting sick and we keep going to the doctor. The doctor diagnoses us and gives us a pharmaceutical. This will likely an antibiotic, maybe prednisone, maybe heart medicine, diabetes medicine, bone medicine, thyroid medicine, pain pills you know how it is. Then we get fat, they give us diet pills, we can’t sleep, and they give us sleeping pills. Our knees hurt and we get anti- inflammatory medicine. It just keeps going until we are so inflamed we have all kinds of things going on and they can no longer find anything wrong with us. If the doctor can’t diagnose it then they can’t treat it and it is written off as a pathological problem and we are left completely on our own.

You know those ads on TV? Where it says, “Oh by the way, if you take these pills you are going to have brain hemorrhages, diarrhea, seizures and maybe death,” well there is a reason they are required to tell you that because it happens.

Then who pays for all this stuff that is making us so sick? Health Insurance, taxes bottom line it all comes back to US! The saddest thing is when nobody pays for it and a person then dies. That happens. Everyone talks like there is no possible solution to this problem. President Obama says we aren’t deciding for ourselves so we HAVE to buy health insurance or he is going to send the IRS after us. (There are some people who don’t like that very much.)

There is a solution to the health care problem! Are you ready?

It is pretty much FREE! LOL… You got to be kidding me…free? YES…FREE. Every person in this country needs to know what it takes to keep them healthy and avoid the big surprise after they have indulged in all the GMO’s, dirty foods and cocktail of pharmaceutical treatments being doled out.

What does it take to be healthy? I know! We need to quit blaming the government, the doctors, our parents, the schools and the grocery store and the farmer. We have to take control and responsibility for our own health.
This is so important. We need to step up to the plate.
We must learn what makes us healthy – self-actualization, learning, esteem, love, safety and physiological needs.
It won’t be easy at first. It will get easier as we go though.

• We HAVE to start eating for nourishment instead of entertainment.
• We have to start moving our bodies.
• We have to de-stress our lives.
• We have to spend more time on spiritual pursuits.
• AND we have to take care of each other.

There are certain things in life that are true. We do need insurance in case of emergency. We do need to face the facts that there are things we are feeding to our bodies that are not nourishing us and realize that they are poisoning us. If we are going to be healthy, we have to get up and move our bodies. Those are THE facts!

We live the life we were raised to live. We buy our groceries in boxes, cans and bags. We grew up eating these foods (our parents DID NOT), and as time has passed and we get busier with our crazy busy lives, we have even gradually evolved to more processed foods. EAT WHOLE FOODS!

I grew up thinking milk was healthy. I had no clue that milk has measurable amounts of herbicides, pesticides, huge amounts of antibiotics, blood, pus feces, bacteria AND viruses. There are a lot of people who still believe that it is healthy because they are still forcing our children to drink it at school. In fact there are some schools that don’t allow their students to have water if they don’t drink their poison laden milk first! MAKE YOUR CHILDREN’S LUNCH!

DID YOU KNOW? That cancer does not grow in an alkaline environment. We may not always be able to cure cancer but we can prevent it from growing. DID YOU KNOW? That sugar feeds cancer?

True Story:
Michael had cancer. His family asked what caused it. There was not one questionnaire or survey on life habits to see what caused it and how to prevent it from recurring. They asked what they could eat to help as they shot radiation into him and they said nothing. The doctor said that there was nothing he could eat to make any difference in his strength, immunity or cancer fighting ability. THIS IS JUST NOT TRUE! We can’t blame the doctor, she knew about how to diagnose and treat cancer. That is what she was required to know in school and now in her profession.

Michael goes back for thousands of dollars in scans 2 times a year….but there is not anything done to find out what caused it, how it could be prevented in the future, or what he could eat to resist infections or regrowth. That just doesn’t even make sense. Most doctors do not have more than 7 hours of nutrition school. Bottom line. FOOD CHANGES EVERYTHING!

I read this: “People are fed by the food industry, who pay no attention to health, and are treated by the health industry, which pays no attention to food.” (Wendell Barry)

I say we change this ourselves. “We the people will learn what it takes to be healthy, happy and strong AND then do it.” (Cathy Sykora)

What’s Love Got to Do with It?

I’m sending you some very important Vitamin “L” advice…

Image

L is for Lisa, licorice, laughter, lake, Labrador, lasagna, and what this month sometimes represents, LOVE, a crucial “vitamin” for a happy and healthy life. As Tina Turner wails it out…”What’s Love Got to Do with It?”  It’s the most important food for the soul.  We all have a need to give and receive love.  One of the best tips I can suggest for bringing more happiness into your life is by improving connections with everyone around you, so more love and intimacy flows into your soul.  Creating deeper, well-connected relationships with others- spouses, intimate partners, parents, children, friends, family, our fine, furry friends and even co-workers, is essential to increasing positive energies in our lives.

When we are free to express our hopes, dreams, joys, fears, and  anger, as well as  our difficulties and accomplishments, with others we all feel a sense of comfort and safety giving us a powerful boost of self because of the deep-rooted connections that support the meaning of life.  Love is a vital human emotion, expression and experience necessary for the optimal functioning of all of our cells, tissues and organs that is known as the “vitamin of healing.”

I believe the quality of relationships explains a lot about a person’s happiness and his or her health.  We are all individual in our needs, wants and desires and should examine where we fall on that scale of life at this very moment in time.  Life’s about finding a type of love and intimacy that is appropriate and nourishing for you, as there is no specific RDA’s (Recommended Daily Allowances).  I think about the saying, “Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”  To live, laugh and love often is boosting our inner vibrations.  It’s putting us in a place where our emotional state has a tremendous impact on our brain and body chemistry by releasing the endorphins (our natural tranquilizers) that contribute to better overall health.  Love equates to producing a “universal” vitalizing energy nutrient.  Vitamin “L” helps to catalyze all human functions and is particularly vital to heart function, circulating warmth and joy within.  It can aid in digestion since the nervous system is vibrantly functioning as it increases healing, and lessens pain and stress, as other hormones are being enhanced.  There are no toxic side effects, however we may have all experienced a strange feeling in the pit of our stomachs, goose bumps or a swooning sensation come over us.

Life is all about the four L’s: loving deeply, laughing often, living well and leading by example. Love is patient, love is kind and love, above all, should not be completely self-less.  As it’s important to prioritize others, it’s also just as important to prioritize YOU!  Self-nurturing time is vital because you matter and I believe our physical bodies are God’s temple.   It’s not selfish to take care of our health because that is equivalent to our own happiness , which is responsible for taking back our lives as it sometimes gets drawn into the matrix of modern-day living.  Choosing to replenish and reinvigorate our physical, mental and emotional well-being by taking time for exercise, preparing and eating healthy nutritious meals, resting and shape-shifting stress is a very important aspect of our lives.  Simple, proven solutions can honor your happiness, by just getting out in nature and breathing the fresh air in an invigorating walk, listening to your favorite music and singing along, enjoying an exercise regimen daily, boosting your energy by taking 10 minutes to meditate quietly or spending quality time being in the moment with someone we love. Each of these activities can create profound inner joy and peace.  As natural nurturers we tend to limit these healthy habits when it comes to ourselves as this would be an act of being selfish.

The primary food on our plates that doesn’t need portion control is the life energy which nourishes our souls throuImagegh healthy relationships, regular physical activity, a fulfilling career and even a spiritual practice.  The human experience is to nourish our hearts and feed our beings with life experiences that fulfill us physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, while proper nutrition is a secondary food necessary to suppress our hunger that satiates our being only temporarily.  Let your cup runneth over with Vitamin “L,” as it is available in a great variety of sources, yet not for sale, as it always must be developed and nurtured for growth and happiness.

HAPPY HORMONE HOLIDAY!

An average person gains 7 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Years with the abundance of holiday festivities, cookies, pies and an overindulgence of alcoholic beverages. With the toxic sugar overload keeping the hunger game revved up, the bodies energies at an all-time sluggish low….all while in the midst of a fast paced lifestyle it makes it difficult to get a grasp on eating diet friendly foods.

When the holidays come to a close and the scale reveals the added pounds, the frustrations with oneself leads to probably the #1 resolution mantra…”it’s time to lose the weight”.  Then so many individuals become stressed by a double whammy of beating themselves up because of emotional eating patterns and by the personal disappointed  verbiage echoing in one’s head because of not feeling strong enough to incorporate all that one needs to stay on track.  The added impact of everyday stress and the stress one feels by not being able to achieve one’s desired goal can cause one to gain weight alone by just carrying around this burden. When the body recognizes stress, cortisol levels go way up and our leptin sensitivity (how we perceive feeling full)decreases and the hunger satiety pangs remain high and so does the scale.

When it comes to health, hormones, stress and gut bacteria have a much bigger effect than many people realize. Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers which are responsible for growth and development, sexual function, reproduction, mood and metabolism which is how your body gets energy from the foods we eat or don’t eat enough of.  Two significant dietary factors that regulate our hormone production are fats and cholesterol.  Making wise food choices can seriously influence the thyroid hormones which regulate the hunger we feel, satiety, fat accumulation and our energy levels.

Fat can be our friend with our bodies especially needing omega-3 fatty acids such as olive oil, avocado’s, nuts, seeds(chia, flax) that are higher in monounsaturated fat and some polyunsaturated fish sources.  It is now known that they help hormones to release glucagon that burns the fat, fills us up by triggering leptin and are the building blocks for keeping cortisol, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone all in check.

The average American diet is high in nutritionally depleted starchy carbohydrates that only causes a surgeance of  insulin to go into the bloodstream making an overload of glucose being dumped into the fat cells of  muscles and tissues. Hence, there’s a population that is extremely overweight, a diabetes crisis and heart disease striking way too many victims. Refined carbohydrates have also been recognized for triggering symptoms consistent with food addiction in the same way cocaine and heroin stimulate the brains pleasure center releasing dopamine. Carbs that are low in starch are to be eaten moderately with more of an emphasis on lean protein.  Being careful with beans that are a rich protein source but contain a higher percentage of starch.  A diet that consists of higher protein will help suppress the hunger hormone ghrelin, builds greater muscle mass that encourages a stronger metabolism to help keep the weight off.  Opt for lean poultry, fish, eggs, game meat, hemp, green chlorophyll rich plant proteins like spinach, kale, ocean vegetables that are highly alkaline and supply absorbable B vitamins.

To build a long lasting healthy weight foundation to reduce your desires to binge during and after the holiday season while also providing good digestive immune support here are six harmonizing hormone suggestions.

One of my favorite protein power tools is a quality whey protein powder which makes for a convenient meal replacement to incorporate into a wonderful morning smoothie.  It builds muscle mass which in turn revs up metabolism, promotes feelings of fullness and our body doesn’t have to work as hard to breakdown this protein which is energizing in itself.  What I love about whey also, is its ability to reduce toxins and triggers the production of our master antioxidant glutathione in the liver. Both of which is very necessary in the very toxic world we live with the amount of exposure to chemical carcinogens and both viral and bacterial microbes dwelling in the indoor environment during the winter months.

One of the weakest links in the American diet is the lack of soluble fiber.  Eating more fiber such as psyllium, oat or rice bran, legumes, and sea vegetables all decrease hunger as their volume increases in the gut it promotes fullness and slows down the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream.  A TLC(therapeutic lifestyle change) diet is based on how many grams of soluble and insoluble fiber  equivalent up towards 15-25 grams per day.  Smart fiber choices might mean getting out of the box by trading up processed foods for real whole nutrient dense foods like fruits, some veggies, barley, brans, nuts, seeds, legumes that adds roughage for important colon health. High glycemic foods and one specific in mind in which to avoid would be whole wheat.  This is another topic in itself and in regards to gluten and other food intolerances and/or allergies factors in on hormonal imbalance.

A probiotic enriched organic yogurt or kefir repopulates the good bacteria in the gut and also helps eliminate harmful pathogens.  These fermented foods with numerous healthy micro-organisms are beneficial for our energy metabolism and absorption enhancing role of necessary nutrients.  Also research has proven a strong connection between digestive health and the nervous system called the brain-gut axis.  This interaction requires tens of billions of numerous strains of good-bug probiotics cultivating in the inner ecosystem to actively ward off mentally damaging depression and other brain ills.

Research supports that green tea consumption will help break down abdominal fat while increasing energy expenditure to burn more calories.  Green tea extract has very potent polyphenols epigallocatechin-3-gallate(EGCG)  which are strong antioxidant and antibacterial compounds, but being  particularly effective in weight control.  A published study from the Journal of the American College of Nutrition  concluded that drinking four cups of green tea or equivalent doses of extract per day “significantly decreased body weight and BMI” in obese people with metabolic syndrome. When metabolism increases weight loss speeds up, but even better yet, is that flavonoids seem to slow down the rise of blood sugar and halts oxidative stress in the body.

Eating three to five times daily steadies insulin levels throughout the day and optimizes metabolism.  By incorporating apple cider vinegar prior to each main meal will do the same but will further help burn the fat instead of storing it.  The acetic acid may inhibit carb absorption while promoting a higher alkaline-acid balance for enhanced digestion.  By consuming 2 tablespoons before meals and at bedtime will regulate better glucose levels and aid in digestive function.  With less stress on the digestive system for breaking down foods when consumed allows the metabolic enzyme function to increase instead of the body being heavily burdened with digestion and absorption with each meal.

Nourish the thyroid by getting sufficient amounts of iodine by consuming more ocean vegetables or forms of algae, such as sea kelp, nori, kumbo and dulse flakes that can be incorporated in salads, soups, stir fry’s or by making nutritious rolls.  By fortifying the thyroid gland ultimately supports normal metabolic function.  Reclaiming your bodies energy responses will simultaneously address the adrenal glands helping to bring more harmony to level the production of the stress hormone cortisol.

By following simple rules to keep hormones in balance and boosting good gut bacteria will conversely optimize health and well-being. Keep the liver clean by detoxifying daily with proper foods and adequate exercise regimens. Consume enzyme-rich foods or add in a good quality complex enzyme to help absorption and assimilation allowing the metabolic process to function adequately.  Eat a fiber-filled, nutrient dense diet to help keep the body highly nourished, stabilizing sugar levels, hunger and promoting the purging of toxins out of the body.  Avoid processed foods, those grown with pesticides, most laddened with preservatives and chemicals ultimately avoiding non-organic produce and livestock that’s been compromised with antibiotic’s, GMO feed and other synthetics.  Keep in mind it’s also what one puts on the body that disrupts the endocrine system which has a profound effect on our well-being.  Avoid xenoestrogens found in hair care products, laundry detergents and personal care products as they play a very serious role in hormonal dysfunction.  They mimic the hormones themselves becoming problematic because the body can attempt to create hormones using the wrong building blocks binding to cells that lead to auto-immune conditions and the incidence of certain cancers.  Drink adequate amounts of ionized water to replenish your tissue and bodies supply of nourishing minerals, being a conduit for cellular exchange and to send the necessary message the brain that hunger is being quelled and it’s not a matter of de-hydration.

Lastly, I wish you much peace and blessings this holiday season and as the New Year rings in… remember to Eat Real, Live Mindfully and Laugh Often!
